Outcomes and Prognosis
Radioiodine Outcomes in Cats | Success Rates & Long-Term Prognosis
Learn about success rates, risks and long-term outcomes of radioiodine treatment for hyperthyroid cats.
What results can you expect?
The outlook for cats treated with radioiodine is excellent. The majority are cured with a single treatment and go on to live normal, healthy lives.
A small number of cats (less than 5%) may need further treatment, and in some cases thyroid levels may become too low. This is usually mild and manageable if it occurs, but may require daily medication with a thyroid supplement if thyroid levels do not return to normal. If your cat needs a second treatment of radioiodine, we will do this for free.
A long-term solution
For many owners, radioiodine treatment provides a lasting solution. Without the need for daily medication or ongoing dose adjustments, cats can return to a more natural routine and improved quality of life.
